1st Grade Social Studies

What we do:

In exploring the idea of neighborhood, we learn that we are each individuals within a community with voices, ideas and experiences. Each of these things is essential to the well-being of the group and needs to be valued by the community. We use these principles to investigate and expand the relationships and components in the neighborhood community beyond the classroom. We examine our own neighborhood in order to identify and work to solve problems we see there.

How we do it:

  • Observe our school and family neighborhoods
  • Neighborhood walks and field trips
  • Read-alouds and independent reading
  • Design, build, and run classroom businesses
  • Collaborative projects
  • Writing and drawing
  • Culminating project: Design and build model of ideal neighborhood
