The Starfish Perform at 826 Valencia
Our Preschool Starfish students love to sing, and last Friday they got to perform to a big audience! 826 Valencia, San Francisco’s beloved educational center for young writers and artists, was having a release party for the latest issue of Illustoria, a magazine that celebrates kids’ creativity, and the Starfish were among the featured performers.
Lately, the Starfish have been learning about the human body. Greg Gardner (Starfish Head Teacher and a talented songwriter) helped them out with a song called “My Skull Is Made Outta Bone,” about all the different parts that combine to make our bodies work. Greg contacted the Illustoria team and arranged for the students to visit the release party and sing some of their favorite songs. “My Skull Is Made Outta Bone” was on the program along with two of Greg’s other greatest hits, “Praying Mantis, Where Are You?” and “Wave a Flag for Harvey Milk.” Other performers in the Starfish band included current CDS parent Ben Sigelman, renowned musician Cass McCombs, and opera singer (and former CDS music teacher) Kindra Scharich. The audience was filled with proud CDS families!
To learn more about Illustoria, which bills itself as “a magazine for creative kids and their grownups,” you can check out their website and order their latest issue here. We would also like to point out that “Wave a Flag for Harvey Milk,” one of the numbers which the Starfish performed, is available not only as a song but also as a coloring book! Find out more here.
