Making Connections Across Grade Levels
At CDS, we believe that building relationships fosters friendships, leadership, and social justice, and making connections on campus is just as important as crafting bonds with the wider community.
In the last few months, some of our seventh grade students have started building relationships in a new way: they’ve been taking part in PALS (Peer-Assisted Learning Support), a program where they regularly visit our kindergarten classrooms to tutor the students in math, science, social studies, and reading. Rather than using a buddy system, the seventh graders work with a variety of kindergartners in order to bond with the class as a whole.
About half of the seventh graders signed up to participate, and they've loved their work so far. "It’s really fun to help the younger kids and to have so many memories of when we were in kindergarten," said one student. Another told us that "the deep connection between us and the kindergarteners helps us both grow." Connections like this will help our learners develop into passionate community members who take the spirit of openness out into the world!
