The CDS Board of Trustees Chair, Cheryl Porro, has directed the Board to form a committee to lead the search for Molly Huffman’s successor as Head of School. Three trustees will lead the Head Search Committee: Chair Emeritus Tracy Kirkham (Gillian ‘07, Greer ‘12, and Sydney ‘12), Angie Jolie (Sofia ‘19 and Joaquin ‘22), and PTTA President Lindsay Woollerson (Henry ‘25). The Committee will also include other CDS parent trustees, teachers, and administrators. Choosing our next Head of School is the work of the Board of Trustees, and we are dedicated to leading a search that provides ample opportunity for CDS community involvement. We are committed to providing you with frequent updates throughout this process.
Our committee leadership has already been very busy. After reviewing proposals and meeting with a number of search firms, the Board has retained Carney Sandoe & Associates to assist in this process. The firm is nationally recognized and has particular expertise in senior-level appointments at independent schools. Our representative from Carney Sandoe & Associates, Bob Fricker, has led many searches in the Bay Area and across the country. He is also a former independent school teacher and Head, and he has been on the Board of Responsive Classroom for many years.
The important work of recruiting the next Head of School will be bolstered by strong community participation and input. To that end, we are pleased to announce that Mr. Fricker will visit CDS to get to know our school community on Wednesday, February 15 and Thursday, February 16. These two days of meetings with CDS parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators will give the consultant a deeper understanding of our school’s culture and philosophy as well as a vision for its future. Please look below for the dates and times of the visit, making note of the two Parent/Guardian Sessions on Wednesday, February 15 (evening) and Thursday, February 16 (morning). These sessions will include an overview of our search process and guided discussions about the future of CDS. If your schedule permits, please consider attending one of these meetings.
Later this month, Mr. Fricker will administer an online community survey to solicit further input. Based on the feedback collected during his visit and from the survey, Mr. Fricker and the Head Search Committee will develop a profile of the qualities that our school seeks in its next leader, and they will spend the next months recruiting and screening candidates. Finalists will visit the campus in the fall, and there will be opportunities for our CDS community to meet with candidates as part of their interview processes and to provide feedback on the candidates. We expect to announce the hiring of a new Head of School by the end of 2017, and that person will begin July 1, 2018.
We welcome any questions or suggestions you may have regarding this process. Please feel free to contact the Head Search Committee Chairs at firstname.lastname@example.org. Periodic updates regarding the search will be shared via email and on ParentSquare.
We are enthusiastic for the opportunity to hire a Head of School who builds on the successes of Molly Huffman. The Head Search Committee, the Board of Trustees, and Carney Sandoe & Associates are extremely confident that CDS’ outstanding faculty and staff, academic excellence, and enthusiastic students and families will attract candidates of stature and result in a very successful appointment.
