Thursday, March 21, 2013

The Herbst Foundation has announced that Melanie Liu, Children's Day School 5th and 6th Grade Humanities Teacher, has been named as the recipient of the 2013 Herbst Award for Teaching Excellence. The award recognizes teachers of grades 6, 7 and 8 at schools in San Francisco. Melanie will receive a $5,000 grant from the foundation and CDS will also receive $5,000.

In the words of those who recommended her for this award, “Melanie is a dedicated teacher who prepares and inspires students on a daily basis. She always challenges her students to be deep thinkers who ask engaging questions about the world around us; be empathetic learners who understand and value diverse perspective; and learn to be comfortable actively participating in conversations about complex and relevant social issues.”

Melanie is now in her eighth year at CDS and has been teaching for twelve years. She has an M.S.Ed. in childhood education and a teaching credential from the Bank Street College of Education (with a focus on middle school) and a B.A. in political science from the University of California at Los Angeles.
