As we approach the winter break, I am constantly reminded how fortunate we are as a community to have one another. Between the partnerships we share, the support that we offer, and the learning throughout, CDS is an amazing community that continues to inspire and challenge the best in all of us. Thank you for being part of it, and may we all enjoy a happy 2018!
Tuesday, December 19 marks the first “Joy Day” for the middle school, as we celebrate the start of the winter break together. School will begin at our normal time at 8:30am, but rather than regular classes, everyone will start the day at 601 where advisories will work together on service projects for most of the morning. Activities will include card making (thank yous to first responders and holiday/new year wishes for senior centers), caroling at Notre Dame Plaza, reading to and playing with Mission Montessori students, and letter writing to Congress. Later in the morning, all middle school students will have the opportunity to “relive a bit of their youth” and have playtime on The Yard at 333 and the Boys & Girls Club before returning to 601 for dismissal.
Two weeks ago a threatening email was sent to most of our 5th grade students from an anonymous gmail account named after a comic book villain. In the course of investigating the source of the email, legal and police experts have weighed in on the email and tell us that it is too vague and generalized to be taken as a true threat to our students and is more likely a misplaced prank. Despite this, we have spoken with all of the middle school students about it and have reached out for help to the SFPD and Google. While we continue to investigate the source of the email, we have reviewed our security protocols at school to ensure that we are doing all we can to keep the safety of all students our top priority.
Good Neighbor Aspirations
Dismissal on Tuesday, December 19 will be a standard dismissal (pickup at our glass “double doors” and self-sign-out from our Dolores Street doors) from 601, at 12pm. If you are picking your child up, please be careful to keep driveways and crosswalks open. There is no aftercare that day. Please be sure to have a conversation with your middle schooler about any afternoon plans before then.
