Extended Day Program
The CDS Extended Day Program activities and schedules are designed to achieve a balance of organized activities and supervised free play. Children may choose from a wide variety of age-appropriate activities such as sports and games, study hall, building, art, music, cooking, gardening, community service projects and visits to the nearby Columbia Park Boys & Girls Club.
Hours and Procedure
A variety of schedules are offered to fit each family’s needs. The Extended Program is available Monday through Friday from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. and after school until 6:00 p.m. every day school is in session (except Grandparents & Special Friends Day and Graduation).
After School Program
The core of the Extended Day Program, our after school program, is offered from dismissal until 6:00 p.m. and includes age-appropriate combinations of academic and recreational activities. Taking full advantage of our protected acre of land, experienced teachers create a dynamic environment that is fun and engaging and provides ample time for play.
Before and after school teachers provide care for students until closing, with students remaining in their individual classes (Leaping Lizards, Teddy Bears and Starfish) until 2:30 p.m., when they are combined into one class, the Butterflies, until 6:00 p.m. Our preschool after school staff consists of seven teachers (including one Head PM Teacher) until 3:30 p.m., after which three teachers remain until 5:00 p.m. and one teacher remains until the last child is signed out.
After school teachers provide indoor and outdoor options after class dismissal on an hourly basis after a period of supervised free play. Students must remain in selected activities until program-wide transition periods. Your child may choose from a wide variety of organized, age-appropriate activities such as:
Art and music
Community service projects
Visits to the nearby Columbia Park Boys & Girls Club
After school clubs are open to students on a drop-in basis and are included in the cost of after school Care Card hours. Most clubs meet twice a week, while some are offered only on Fridays. Popular clubs have included Farm and Garden, Fun Hall, Face Paint, Ballon Animals, Outdoor Sports and Games, Watercoloring, and Peerler Beads!
Recognizing the importance of providing working parents with engaging options for their children when school is not in session, we offer two one-week themed camps during the February and April vacations at a daily or weekly rate. Themes may include urban wildlife, art adventures, city explorations or gardens in the city. All camps are available from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Recent themes have included:
City-wide scavenger hunt
Gardens in the city
Kids in space
Behind the scenes of San Francisco
Bodies in motion
Taught by CDS teachers, community teachers, and instructors from accredited local organizations, three sessions of exciting enrichment classes are offered each year. Classes meet for one hour a week after school and cost varies, depending on the number of classes. Classes may include:
- Computers: Technology and Art
- Joy of Theater
- Movie Making
- Spanish Singing and Dancing
