campus
Located across from historic Mission Dolores in San Francisco and nestled safely in the middle of the block behind Notre Dame Plaza, our campus has one of the largest outdoor schoolyard spaces in San Francisco.

Bordered by palm trees, our sunny campus features an organic garden and farm, which is home to chickens and sheep. Equipped with swings, a climbing structure and sandbox, bikes and a basketball court, our campus gives children a safe place to play freely, be themselves and explore the natural environment.

The stately, Spanish-colonial style architecture of our main classroom building offers large, airy classrooms for students in grades K-8. Extensive renovations to St. Joseph's Hall in 2007 and 2008 have added classrooms and enhanced the building's safety and accessibility. Our library, music room and most administrative offices are located in an adjacent building added to the CDS campus in February 2008. The preschool, located in three bungalow classrooms adjacent to the farm and garden, has easy access to the large, sunny playground.

An 18,000 square foot building located at 601 Dolores Street was acquired in 2011 and after renovation will be the middle school (grades 5-8) campus.

A Greener Campus
Children’s Day School is going green! In addition to our long-term goal of creating a LEED-certified main classroom building, our Green Task Force (a committee of faculty and students in third grade and up) is working to raise awareness in our community about environmental responsibility.

"Way to Go Green" Tip

  • If you never unplug your electronic devices that are powered by remote control, these electronic "vampires" will drain off energy, even while you sleep! Learn how to turn off electronic devices so that they don't waste energy when not in use.

Green Task Force accomplishments

  • Partnering with SF Environment to conduct a waste assessment. We recycle and compost 69% of our waste – this is a good start, but we want to be even better.
  • Installing compost and recycling bins on every floor, and in most classrooms, of our main classroom building.
  • Reducing energy consumption by lowering thermostats throughout the school and pursuing a “Lights Off” campaign.
  • Hosting “Earth-Friendly Fridays” where everyone is encouraged to come to school in earth-friendly ways (bike, walk, public transit, carpool).
  • Creating a battery recycling program.
  • Recycling school-owned electronics through Green Citizen.
  • Implementing an online admission application.

Green Task Force Projects

  • Continuing to educate the community about composting, recycling and energy conservation to further reduce trash production and our carbon footprint.
  • Working toward garbageless lunches!
  • Expanding recycling program to accept electronics owned by CDS community members.
  • Creating an organized carpool system.
  • Decreasing paper consumption by making report cards, directories, forms and other school materials available online.
