Phase 3: Concluding the Project

Birth of the Bok Bok Song

As our chicken project was winding down our music specialist, Mr. Damion, introduced a new instrument-- his mandolin.  He then wondered if the children would like to put their newfound knowledge of chickens into song form, and here is the result:

Culminating experience.

During our project the children have been practicing the “Chicken Dance”.  We had a brief showing of our project in progress at the school’s Art and Agriculture Fair, after which the children agreed that they would have enjoyed doing their dance for the fair.

The children decided that they would like to invite their families to a final presentation of their project work, which would include the chicken dance and the Bok Bok Song.  Invitations were printed, decorated and sent out.  A parent even offered to make “chicken-themed” snacks for after the presentation.

On the day of the presentation, June 20, the classroom was set up to reflect all of the chicken work we have done.  The children’s clipboards containing their field notes were displayed, as well as the charts of our favorite chickens, egg counting, Venn diagram, items we found on the farm, chicken breeds, and egg development.  All of the children’s chicken and egg art was displayed, the incubator was set up, and our candling supplies were made available.  In addition, a local version of the Chicken Project Web Site was put on the class computer for all to see.

Just prior to the families entering the classroom the schools first grade class did a walk through and were able to share in the knowledge of their young schoolmates.

The children then brought their families into the classroom to show them their work.  The Teddy Bears, these amazing three-year-olds, were taking their parents around the room showing the incubator and all of its parts, . . .

. . . showing how to candle an egg,

discussing the various breeds,

showing the different types of combs,

and showing what chickens eat.

The children then gathered together
for their performance of the Chicken Dance...

...and the Bok Bok Song...

...complete with egg-shaped shakers!

When the performance concluded everyone gathered outside for deviled eggs and Light Brahma cupcakes made by one of our moms who downloaded the chicken pictures from this website!
